CHARACTER
Name: Yuri George
Series: Black Jack
Canon: AU; Because there is so little of her in canon, I am combining both the manga storyline and the Black Jack 21 anime series for her original history, and then extrapolating off of that to make it AU.
Age: 27
Timeline: After the events of both the main storyline and the 21 series. In this timeline the deadly parasite Gumma has caused a pandemic making the environment post-apocalyptic.
World Information:
The world of Black Jack does not differ too much from a typical modern day earth. What does add the element of change to it is the presence of super viruses and the like that cause almost unrealistic diseases or conditions. There is also the surgical prowess of the main character, who can often cure usually incurable cases simply because he is that talented (i.e. curing tuberculosis with surgery). This degree of medical fantasy is what sets the stage for many of the major events in the series, including every scene in which Yuri is present.
History:
Yuri George is a ridiculously obscure character in the canon by a Western standpoint, because many casual fans will miss her or pay her no mind after she plays out her part. Indeed, she has only three appearances in canon; Two chapters in the original manga, and one episode of the Black Jack 21 spin off anime series. I will attempt to keep headcanon to a minimum concerning her documented history, but with so little to go on, extrapolation of events or spans of time is unavoidable.
Yuri is the younger sister to the series only re-occurring “villain”, Dr. Kiriko George. Their father is Dr. Edward George, a world renowned doctor who worked in New York city as mentioned in the 21 series. Because Yuri is shown to be living and working in Canada with her then sick and bedridden father in the 21 series, I am assuming that is where their family originates from regardless of Dr. George’s working career in the United States. That being said, the rest of their family background is a bit ambiguous and left open for interpretation. Both siblings are shown with pale hair and eyes, which is generally an ascetic associated with the Western world, while their given names clearly indicate a Japanese influence. So while their mother is never mentioned, it is assumed that she was of Japanese descent. As Yuri is shown as the only person other than her brother to be at their father’s side when he falls ill, it is also assumed that their mother passed away at an earlier point.
Yuri’s first appearance in the original manga is the chapter entitled ‘There was a Valve!’, which her singular 21 series episode debut, ‘The Destiny of the Black Doctor’, is based on. The premise for both is the same; Dr. Edward George has fallen deathly ill, and while Yuri and Black Jack wish to somehow save him, Kiriko is trying to euthanize his father. The 21 series is known for taking the standalone manga chapters and stringing them together into a conspiracy theory thriller. So in 21, Dr. George is not only dying of Pneumothorax (air escaping from the lungs into the chest cavity which puts pressure on to the internal organs), but it is Pneumothorax caused by the mysterious Phoenix Disease. Phoenix Disease is caused by a mutated form of the Phoenix virus, which was actually discovered and developed by Dr. George. The virus gets its name from its apparent ability to delay the ageing process, which in reality only works for a set period before destroying its host’s immune system and causing any number of body systems to fail or develop abnormalities.
In ‘The Destiny of the Black Doctor’, Yuri is introduced when she mistakenly fires her rifle at Black Jack, as she though he was her brother come to kill their father. Stories on each side are then exchanged; Black Jack along with his sidekick-daughter Pinoko are looking for Dr. George, who they know is somehow connected to the Noir Project, a top secret global organization working on advances in medicine, and Phoenix Disease. In turn Yuri explains to Black Jack the danger her father is in both from the Pneumothorax and her brother who seeks to euthanize him. She then asks Black Jack to save Dr. George, to which he agrees. Before Black Jack can do anything however, Kiriko does show up on the scene and tries to kill his father with his sister's rifle. Black Jack stops Kiriko, questions him about Phoenix Disease and the Noir Project, and then forces him to help in the operation to save his father’s life. Yuri was also going to assist, but when she hears shots fired in the woods her responsibilities as a member of the wildlife conservation organization KERNS takes precedence. Her and Pinoko confront a pair of poachers in the woods while Black Jack and Kiriko save Dr. George. At one point Kiriko does administer poison when the situation looks grim, only to have Black Jack find and fix the valve causing the Pneumothorax, and then also save Dr. George from the effects of the toxin meant to kill him.
All of these efforts end up being for naught. Phoenix Disease’s destructive nature takes the life of Dr. George, leaving Black Jack no closer to his goal of uncovering the conspiracy surrounding the disease and taking away another one of Yuri’s family members. Kiriko leaves not soon after, and the next day Yuri advises Black Jack to look for answers at her father’s research cabin further up in the mountains. With this, Yuri’s role in the Black Jack 21 anime series comes to an end.
The manga chapter this episode is based on, ‘There was a Valve!’, follows roughly the same path. It is of course different as the plotline of 21 was constructed far later but does not majorly conflict with the anime. In this version, a rampaging Kiriko bursts into Black Jack’s home clinic demanding that he stop hiding his patient. Black Jack has no idea what he’s talking about, and Kiriko eventually leaves. Only a short while later, Yuri arrives with her deathly ill father suffering from an unexplainable and incurable case of Pneumothorax. Again, Kiriko believes that euthanasia is the only option left and Yuri goes to Black Jack as her last desperate attempt to save Dr. George. Kiriko returns to try to end his father’s life, is similarly enlisted to assist with a lifesaving operation instead, and then injects his father with poison when Black Jack isn’t looking. This is what causes Dr. George to die in the original manga, even though Black Jack does find and fixes the cause of the Pneumothorax killing him.
Yuri’s second manga appearance comes not long after the death of her father in the chapter entitled ‘99% Water’. She comes to Black Jack once again with a problem; This time, it’s Kiriko who is dying of some mysterious condition, and he intends to kill himself. Black Jack agrees to go with her and do what he can, and the two of them travel to a remote island where Kiriko has hidden himself. They learn upon arrival that Kiriko has contracted a disease known as Gumma that has been running rampant in the jungles of South America, where he was recently employed to euthanize a wealthy landowner suffering from it. Gumma seems to have no cause or explanation, although it is highly contagious. It kills the victim by filling the abdomen with water which then ruptures, causing severe attacks, before it makes its way to the brain and tears it apart while inducing fatal seizures.
Kiriko is enraged that Yuri has not only come when he specifically told her to stay away, but also that she’s brought Black Jack. She is adamant that she will not let him kill himself, and at that Kiriko reveals he has hidden dynamite in the house in order to destroy both himself and the contagion. Luckily for everyone, he has an attack before he can detonate it, and they take the opportunity to disarm him. Black Jack is obviously able to both save Kiriko and discover the cause of Gumma, which is a parasite made up of 99% water and is therefore invisible to most conventional testing. With her brother saved, Yuri’s role in the manga is over.
As per these events, Yuri’s relationship with her brother Kiriko is rather complicated. She is shown as both being very close to him and also very distant as his attitude and profession drive a wedge between them. Yuri is very attached to him regardless, partially because of the absence of their mother in any sort of canon and partially because she knows what Kiriko was like before fighting in the war changed him. She has a conversation with Pinoko in her 21 series episode in which she says her brother is not a bad person, as he is trying to help people in his own way, but something happened in the war that caused him to drastically alter his view of the world. And when she comes running to Black Jack for help in ‘99% Water’ it is clear that she still cares about him regardless of him euthanizing their father. In canon, all of her appearances are directly related to Kiriko and what Kiriko is doing at that time, so her actions and decisions are very much dependent on him.
This brings us to the AU part of Yuri’s history. With a world that seems to be so constantly plagued by one lethal pandemic or another, it is not unlikely that eventually a cure or last second solution would be found. In this timeline, Gumma has spread from South America to the rest of the world and is causing death on a widespread scale. Countries are closing their borders, the population is in a state of mass panic, and society has started on the slippery slope to a post-apocalyptic. Amongst all this chaos, Yuri is truly alone for the first time in her life as her father has passed away and Kiriko is missing. For a short while she looks for Kiriko across the globe, but when her search turns up nothing and the world goes in to lock down, she the resigns to the fact he is probably dead. This is the point where I would like to take Yuri from, where she is now surviving on the fringes of civilization as it falls apart around her.
I would also like Yuri to have her memories of when she was in Niteo Nix’s recent 4th Wall event if it would be allowed! Link to proof of her participation is here ---> http://niteo-nix.livejournal.com/6461.html?thread=545085#t545085
Personality:
Yuri is shown to be extremely emotionally volatile. She is quick to break down in to tears over anything, especially if it involves family, and regardless of if the event is good or bad. Yuri cries when she tells Black Jack of her father’s condition and when he eventually dies, she cries when Kiriko shows up and yells at her, and cries in joy when Kiriko is saved from dying. Any little thing seems to be able to set her off, although she’s also shown to recover from it rather quickly. Yuri is on the surface very much the characterization of a sweet, sensitive woman who has probably been sheltered most of her life. She cares deeply for her family, and as shown will go to great lengths for them. Her involvement in the organization KERNS also shows her clear desire to help both people and the environment.
She is naïve, openly trusting, and optimistic; Yuri often believes in the best of people, which would include those otherwise shunned by the general populace. She disagrees with Kiriko’s practice of euthanasia, but obviously still believes he is a good person and can change. She also never judges or comments on the fact that Black Jack is a back alley doctor operating about a license, showing that she thinks of him as trustworthy, even though he works illegally.
Yuri also has a brave and reckless streak, which is best shown by her being so protective of her father’s life that she was willing to raise arms against and shoot at her own brother, with clear intent to do harm need be. It seems to take very specific things to get a girl who is normally quiet and kind so angry, but as shown again in the 21 episode, certain things like poachers in her backyard are on that list. Yuri is furious enough to single handedly intimidate two poachers who not only have the advantage of numbers and are easily twice her size, they are heavily armed as well. And yet, she gets them to drop their weapons and flee.
In her AU, she will have been forced to ‘grow up’ quite a bit. While she is still a kind person willing to help others, she has lost much of her idealism about the world due to the loss of family and the deteriorating global community. Things will still upset her, but not to the full out bawling effect as she was previously shown to achieve in canon. She is not nearly as optimistic about people now that the pandemic has brought out the panicking masses and shown her the darker side of humanity she had missed thus far. It is not as if she won’t help a stranger in need, it’s more of that she’s a lot more cautious than she used to be and she’s not apt to let anyone get too close. Yuri is also in more control of her emotions, because getting upset over the little things could waste valuable time in which she needs to be doing things to ensure her survival.
Abilities/Additional Notes: Yuri has a decent background in medicine due to her family history, which makes her a passable nurse or medical assistant in a pinch. She is also skilled in wilderness survival as she has stated she is a member of KERNS and is used to living in an extremely rural area. Yuri is additionally an excellent shot, as shown of how she intentionally did not shoot to harm when she mistook Black Jack for Kiriko.
Third-Person Sample:
This wasn’t home.
Home, while isolated and lonely in its own right, wasn’t this crumbling scene of decay. Other places, where the pandemic had hit hardest, did look like this; Ghost towns of derelict structures that now lay empty because entire populations had been wiped out practically overnight.
The abrupt transition from a mountain ringed valley in the wilderness to dead and dusty streets does more than startle Yuri. It terrifies her, makes her jump to wakefulness and cling to her weapon like it’s her only lifeline. This was not where she belonged.
It takes several more minutes of forcing herself to think rationally before she works up the nerve to take a look around. Every corner she turns down is another abandoned husk, gone wild for years and ever so quiet, and yet she can’t shake the feeling that something still clings to this place. Logic tells her that it’s ridiculous to think anyone could still be living here, or that the dearly departed never left. Instinct tells her she should be running away as fast as she can before whatever is lurking in every shadow.
Yuri hasn’t gotten this far on following either of them blindly. There was a time when she would have reacted without thinking of the consequences, or relied on her foolish heart to make major decisions. Not anymore. As the now only surviving member of her family, she had only one goal to fulfill for as long as she could;
Stay alive.

[She may not have realized this is not her world yet, but she is not about to meekly allow someone to take control of her life, kidnapped or otherwise.]
And this had better not be a quarantine camp. I know my rights.
